We recently bought Twiggy an inflatable pool and decided to give it a test run last weekend. It wasn’t exactly warm that day but like most kids I know (i.e. me), they don’t care. It’s a pool! It’s full of water! Anything beyond that, like sunlight or heat, is simply a bonus. A nice to have, if you will.
In late 2009 I bought an Alien Bees B800. One thing I knew was possible but hadn’t tried was overpowering the sun with it. Seeing how Twiggy was going to be confined to a small area (a pool), I thought it was a good opportunity to experiment! So I set up the B800 on a stand with a 50×50 Apollo softbox. I found that cranking the strobe to full power and shooting at f/11 was giving me the look I wanted. These were all shot around noon on a sunny day. In the sun. Needless to say this little strobe can push out some serious light.
